What is a Multi-Channel Fiber Optic Rotary Joint (MC-FORJ)?
A multi-channel fiber optic rotary joint transmits 2, 4, 8, 16 or more independent optical signals across a 360° rotating interface. Inside the housing, precision micro-optics and high-speed rotary alignment structures create a separate collimated beam path for each fiber channel. Light from every stationary fiber is coupled into its matching rotating fiber with ultra-low insertion loss (<1 dB typical) and negligible crosstalk (<-55 dB), so each channel can carry DC to >100 Gbps data, DWDM wavelengths or high-power laser energy simultaneously without interference. The result is maintenance-free, EMI-free rotation for advanced radar, medical imaging, robotic and energy systems.
Where Multi-Channel FORJs Are Used
1. AESA radar antennas – 8-channel FORJ feeds transmit/receive modules
2. Wind-turbine nacelles – 12-channel bundle for blade sensors, pitch control and fiber-optic strain monitoring
3. Medical CT/PET scanners – 4-16 channel links for rotating detector arrays
4. Subsea ROVs & trenchers – 4-32 channel umbilical reels for 4K cameras, LIDAR and sonar data
5. Broadcast 4K/8K cameras – 2-6 channel slip-rings for SMPTE 2110 IP video
6. Industrial robots – multi-channel FORJ plus power hybrid for laser-welding arms
7. Drone tether systems – 2-channel FORJ for power-over-fiber communication
8. Space simulation tables – 16-channel FORJ for fiber-optic gyro test equipment
