What is a Single-Channel Fiber Optic Rotary Joint (FORJ)?
A single-channel fiber optic rotary joint—often called a fiber optic slip ring—is a precision electro-optical device that allows uninterrupted transmission of optical signals across a continuously rotating interface. It works by coupling light from a stationary fiber into a rotating fiber (or vice-versa) through a collimated lens system. Because only glass and light meet at the interface, the device is immune to EMI, offers extremely low insertion loss (<0.5 dB typical) and delivers data rates from DC to >100 Gbps with virtually no bit-error-rate penalty. The result is maintenance-free rotation for single-mode or multimode fiber links in radar pedestals, wind turbines, medical CT scanners, robotic welders, ROVs and more.
